CHIQUITA BRANDS: S&P Assigns 'CCC' Rating on US$200M Sr. Notes
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services assigned its 'CCC' senior unsecured rating to Chiquita Brands International Inc.'s US$200 million convertible senior notes due 2016. Net proceeds from the issuance were used to repay a portion of the US$375 million term loan C (US$132 million outstanding at Dec. 31, 2007, pro forma for this notes offering) of its senior secured credit facility. About US$820 million of debt was outstanding at Dec. 31, 2007.
The ratings on Cincinnati, Ohio-based Chiquita reflect the company's high debt leverage, weak credit measures, and its product concentration in bananas and packaged salad. The company competes in the fruit and vegetable industry, which is mature and faces uncontrollable factors such as global supply, world trade policies, political risk, currency swings, weather, and disease.
